The Best Things To Do In Portsea

Portsea is a popular seaside holiday town on the Mornington Peninsula and is the most westernmost settlement. During the summer, wealthy Melburnians flock to Portsea to escape the city.

You’ll spot enormous 19th-century mansions, gardens and tennis courts, which demonstrates that Portsea is a rather exclusive place to live and holiday. In 1802, Lieutenant Murray spent a few weeks exploring the area and named Point Nepean. At the time, there was high demand for lime which was used as a mortar in building. Another reason Portsea is famous is because it is the area where an Australian prime minister went missing while spearfishing off Cheviot Beach in 1967. Harold Holt’s body was never recovered and the area where he went missing is now known as the Harold Holt Marine Reserve.

From Portsea the yachts head out to Port Phillip Heads, past Lonsdale Reef and then heading out to the entrance of Port Phillip Bay before the change of tide. The yachts then have to cross Bass Strait and make it over to Tasmania. This race happens at the end of December each year and is a total of 435 nautical miles.

It’s about a 1 hour and 40-minute drive to Portsea.

The best way to see this part of the Victorian coastline is to take a cruise. There are plenty of boat charters that offer cruises including one day and overnight options. You’ll be able to experience the spectacular views of Port Phillip Bay. Some cruise options include gourmet lunch and wine. If you’re lucky, you might even see a dolphin.

Point Nepean National Park

Point Nepean National Park is located at the Port Phillip Heads and is the second oldest permanent quarantine station in Australia. There are over 50 heritage-listed buildings and a number of military forts dating back to the late 1800s.

When you reach the end of Point Nepean Road, there is a visitor centre where you can hire bikes, or if you prefer you can go on foot. You’ll need to pay a small fee to enter but it’s a great place to explore.

The ferry that runs from Sorrento to Queenscliff makes a brief stop at Portsea. This two-hour trip is a great scenic ferry ride with possible dolphin and seal sightings. You can also book fishing trips, boat charter services, scuba diving and snorkelling trips.

For scuba diving enthusiasts, you can book a trip to the HMAS Canberra wreck. There are opportunities for divers with different levels of experience, from open water level to advanced wreck divers to enjoy this site.

London Bridge

London Bridge is a local attraction in Portsea, which is located to the west of Portsea Back Beach. It’s an impressive rock formation that lines the coastline. There are many rock formations dotted along the coast, but none as eye-catching as the London Bridge. You can check it out from the lookout or wander down to the beach to see it up close.

The Coastal Walk

The Coastal Walk runs from London Bridge to Cape Schanck and is a total of 28 km. If you don’t want to do the whole walk there are a number of subsections that you can do. Along it you’ll see spectacular jagged cliffs, rock pools, sand dunes, rock formations and beautiful beaches including Blairgowrie, Rye, St Andrews and Gunnamatta. Not all of these beaches are safe to swim or surf at so it’s important to swim between surf lifesaving flags. Keen birdwatchers should look out for giant petrels and albatrosses out at sea.

Shelley Beach Walk

Shelley Beach is located between Portsea and Sorrento and is an enjoyable walk. You’ll see colourful bathing boxes and a lovely sandy beach. There is very limited parking so it’s much better to walk there from Portsea.

Where to eat in Portsea

The Portsea Hotel is a popular drinking establishment with excellent views of Port Phillip Bay. During the summer months, people flock here from all over the Peninsula including Rosebud and Rye, so if you’re hoping to grab a table it’s best to get here early. You’ll find plenty of local beers and wines on the menu, as well as wood fired pizzas and other pub classics.

On a budget? Luckily there are plenty of fun things to do on Phillip Island that won’t cost you a cent! Below are some of the highlights.

Beaches

Swimming at the beach is free and there are lots of nice beaches on Phillip Island where you can go for a dip safely. Phillip Island was the first National Surfing Reserve and has four big surfing spots including: Cape Woolamai, Summerland, Cat Bay and Smiths Beach. There are plenty of big waves, but also spots that are suitable for beginner surfers.

If you don’t own your own surfboard, there are shops to hire gear or sign up for surfing lessons.

Pinnacle Lookout at Cape Woolamai

After the drive to Phillip Island, you’ll definitely need to stretch your legs. Take a stroll to the Pinnacle Lookout, which is an hour’s walk from the beach carpark. You’ll get some beautiful views at sunrise or sunset.

Wineries

You don’t have to buy wine at a winery (although it’s certainly encouraged). Walking through the vineyards is free and you’ll get some lovely views. Many wineries also offer free tastings.

Fishing

Phillip Island has plenty of great fishing spots including Cowes, San Remo, Rhyll and Newhaven. Got a boat? Even better. Get out on the water for the day and cook up what you catch. It’s a fun day out and you’ll have dinner sorted out.

Didn’t get a bite? San Remo Fishing Co-operative does the best fish ‘n’ chips, so either way you won’t go hungry.

Penguin Parade

A visit to Phillip Island isn’t complete without seeing the famous Penguin Parade. The colony is the smallest species of penguin in the world and Phillip Island is one of the few places you can see them in the wild. The penguins spend most of their day out at sea hunting for fish, but at sunset they come back to nest on Summerland Beach.

There are lots of spots to watch the penguins from including the standard viewing platform, underground, or the deluxe viewing section. This penguin facility welcomes over 3.5 million people every year and during lockdown you could even live stream the penguins returning to their burrows from your computer.

Koala Conservation Centre

As if penguins aren’t enough, you can check out some more cute, furry friends at the Koala Conservation Centre. Only a 7-minute drive from Rhyll, the centre has a number of fun treetop boardwalks where you and the kids can look out for koalas eating or napping up in the top branches. The centre covers six hectares of bushland with plenty of other native wildlife to look out for including echidnas, wallabies and birds.

Seal rocks

Still want to see more wildlife? Catch an eco-boat out to Seal Rocks, which some 35,000 fur seals have made their home. It’s Australia’s largest seal colony located two kilometres offshore from Nobbies. The seals love this spot as it’s great for hunting, swimming and resting. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a few of these curious creatures swimming up to the boat and showing off in the water. Between May and October, it’s even possible to sometimes spot dolphins and humpback whales.

Churchill Island Heritage Farm

This is the site of the first farm in Victoria and it’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. There are lots of animals wandering to keep the kids entertained including ducks, geese, chickens, horses, sheep and cows. Make sure you check out some of the farm shows that are held daily including whip cracking, sheep shearing and cow milking.

Grenache Wine Bar

A great place to check out for people looking for both excellent food and wine. Grenache Wine Bar uses local Gippsland ingredients and the food is Mediterranean. Not only do they have an extensive international and local wine list, but Grenache also stocks over 100 different types of gin. This place is sure to please everybody.

The Cape Kitchen

Are you looking for a brunch spot with a view? Check out The Cape Kitchen, which supports regional Victorian producers especially from Gippsland. The Best Wineries for Lunch on the Mornington Peninsula

Only an hour from Melbourne is Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Famous for its beautiful beaches and excellent cool-climate wines, especially chardonnays and pinot noirs.

If you’re a wine aficionado though, you probably already know that. Mornington Peninsula is home to more than 200 vineyards, 60 wineries and over 50 cellar doors. While many can be found around Red Hill, they spread as far as Moorooduc to Balnarring.

While the region hasn’t been growing wine anywhere near as long as the Yarra Valley, it’s fast becoming one of Australia’s best wine regions. There’s nothing more relaxing than heading to a winery for lunch and wandering through the grapevines with a glass of vino in hand.

We’ve compiled our list of the best wineries for lunch on the Mornington Peninsula, so you don’t miss out on the best views (or the food).

Pt. Leo Estate

Address : 3649 Frankston – Flinders Rd, Merricks VIC 3916

Vineyards, ocean, sculpture park – Pt. Leo Estate has it all. Not to mention their amazing Pt. Leo Restaurant with exquisite food and delicious wines to match. Located on the south-eastern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Pt. Leo Estate spans over 135 hectares, 20 of those hectares make up the vineyard.

There are two restaurants: Pt. Leo Estate Restaurant and Laura. Pt. Leo is the main dining space which overlooks the vineyards and the ocean. The menu is contemporary Australian and features local produce from the region. Laura is their fine dining restaurant, which has a degustation menu and a 40-page wine list. Both restaurants are run by former Rockpool executive chef Phil Wood who has turned Pt. Leo Estate into a world class dining destination.

Make sure to leave some time to wander the sculpture park afterwards which is free if you’re dining in.

Red Hill Estate

The menu changes seasonally and you can expect dishes that use produce that is locally sourced. You can even choose to do a food and wine matching at their cellar door. Six cool climate wines are matched with six delicious morsels. Bookings are recommended.

Montalto

Address : 33 Shoreham Rd, Red Hill South VIC 3937

Another winery stop that also features a sculpture garden, then you can’t miss Montalto. They’re famous for their amazing views, cool climate wines and wood fired pizzas. Best of all, they have different dining options depending on your budget. Montalto with Matt Wilkinson is their fine dining restaurant, while for more casual dining there is The Piazza, which is better for larger groups or people who want to spend their lunch out on the lawn enjoying their time with friends or family with a glass of wine.

For something a little more private, Montalto allows guests to book a secluded picnic at one of their 10 sites across the estate. You’ll be greeted by a white linen set table with seasonal food inspired by the estate and the Mornington Peninsula.

Polperro

Polperro is a wonderful place to relax. Before you even make it into the restaurant, you’ll find huge gum trees that shade the deck chairs outside where people can enjoy a cheese board and bottle of wine.

The food at the Polperro restaurant is creative and made using the finest produce from the area including their sourdough bread which comes from Tuerong and is paired with a whipped cultured butter.

You can also choose to do their ‘Tour Menu’, where each dish is paired with one of their estate made wines. It’s priced at $105 per person or with added wines at $70 per person.

Ten Minutes by Tractor

The restaurant at Ten Minutes by Tractor has only recently reopened due to a fire in 2018. The winery started back in 1997 with three vineyards in Main Ridge, which were all ten minutes apart by tractor (hence the name).

Adam Sanderson is the executive chef at Ten Minutes by Tractor, who has worked at one of the world’s best restaurants, Noma in Denmark. You can choose to do a five or an eight course degustation menu or a three course menu of your choice.

The wine list has been compiled by sommelier Xavier Vigier and before the fire the wine list was 100-pages long. It has now been reduced to a much easier to digest format but you can find a range of old world and new world wines, and of course lots of wines from the local area.

Tucks

Tucks does a picturesque winery lunch and on weekends you can choose to do their Tuck In menu, which is a selection of their favourite dishes plus a bottle of wine for $110 for two people.

T’Gallant

They also sell a range of beverages in cans which are easier to consume if you want something easy to take away and share with friends. T’Gallant has a pizzeria that serves up antipasto platters and pizzas which are excellent for big groups. It’s important to note that their restaurant only takes walk-ins so it’s a good idea to get there when they open so you don’t miss out on a table.

The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows to allow you to see the sprawling vineyards across the property.

Coast & Country Supports Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron’s Pink Day 2021

Coast & Country loves supporting a good cause and on Saturday 9 January, we organised Pink Day 2021 at the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.

We proudly sponsored the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron’s Ladies Skippers’ Race in support of finding a cure for breast cancer.

Pink Day is a great campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer, which affects thousands of Australians and their families each year.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, eight women die every day and 55 Australians are diagnosed with the disease every day.

In 2020, many breast cancer patients were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic due to delays on surgery because of bans on elective surgeries.

A survey by the Breast Cancer Network Australia found that 56% of people surveyed were feeling anxious about the impact of COVID-19 on their breast cancer care.

So we encouraged everyone to come down to the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron on January 9 dressed in something pink and bold to support this worthy cause.

Everyone got involved and there were some interesting outfits on display by both men and women which was great to see!

The day was a great success and the weather was excellent for a day out on the water.

We raised a total of $3,700 with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Coast & Country also provided one of the raffle prizes which was a $100 voucher for lawn services.

There were many other local businesses that we enlisted to support the cause, and they generously donated prizes including Sorrento Collective, Minding Houses, The Wine Company, Cornell’s Fresh Seafood, Sorrento Sea Baths, Meat Heath, White Nest, Saltwater and the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron themselves.

We want to thank the local community for supporting our raffle fundraising initiative.

The fastest route is to take the M1 and join the Eastlink tollway. You’ll see some bizarre roadside artwork along the way. Then take the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and then Moorooduc Freeway and you’ll reach the Mornington Peninsula.

Getting to Mornington Peninsula by public transport is possible with trains running from Melbourne every 15-20 minutes. Catch the metropolitan train service to Frankston. From there you can catch a bus that will take you to various stops on the Mornington Peninsula.

For those flying into Victoria, the closest airports are Melbourne Tullamarine Airport or Avalon Airport outside of Geelong.

The most scenic option is catching the ferry from Queenscliff on the Great Ocean Road to Sorrento. The ferry leaves every hour between 7am and 6pm. If you have a car or other motor vehicle, they can be taken on the ferry. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a dolphin.

Wineries to eat at on the Mornington Peninsula

Montalto

Montalto is a lovely winery, not just for its food and wine but its beautiful landscape. A visit to Montalto isn’t complete without a stroll along their architecture trail, which features over 30 sculptures that are part of Montalto’s permanent collection as well as finalists from the annual Montalto Sculpture Prize Exhibition which are shown from February through to the end of August.

There are also different food options at Montalto including their main restaurant headed by noted chef Matt Wilkinson. This restaurant has been awarded 16 Good Food Chef’s Hats since it opened in 2002 and features seasonal local and estate-grown produce cooked on their woodfire grill.

If you’re looking for something a bit more casual, there’s also the Piazza which is great for group bookings and sitting out on the lawn overlooking the vineyard. Montalto also offers spring picnics that can be booked in advance. The staff will set up a beautiful picnic for you and your guests at one of the picnic sites scattered across the estate for a unique experience.

Mornington Peninsula is home to over 100 wineries, so make sure you do some tastings at a few to see what the region has to offer. Mornington is known for producing excellent pinot noir and chardonnay.

Red Gum BBQ

If smoked meats are your thing, then you need to check out Red Gum BBQ for an authentic American BBQ experience. One of the owners, Martin took up residency at a barbeque joint in South George before he and his wife opened Red Gum BBQ in 2017. The smoker has been imported from Texas and each cut of meat is priced by weight. The restaurant space was once a truck mechanics warehouse so there’s an industrial feel to it but it’s the smell of the slow-cooked meats that’ll get you salivating.

Wowee Zowee

The owner behind Wowee Zowee wanted to create a place where people could come in alone, sit at the bar and talk to the barman or strike up a conversation with the person next to them. On the menu you’ll find fried chicken, but they’re also well-known for their vegan snacks. The Broc ‘n’ Roll is a bread roll stuffed with spiced broccolini, cashew feta and salt and vinegar chips. They also have a great cocktail and wine list with plenty of local and American beers on tap.

Merricks General Wine Store

This café is open for breakfast and lunch, so it’s the perfect place to start your day or come in later for a leisurely lunch. Famous for its delicious seasonal-inspired country cuisine, you’ll find house made breads, locally sourced produce and an extensive range of local wines on their menu.

Ten Minutes by Tractor

The winery got its name because the three main vineyards are all located within a 10-minute tractor ride from each other. It was the first organically certified vineyard in the region and each vineyard has distinctly different tasting wine. Ten Minutes by Tractor has an incredible restaurant that is worth checking out too.

Walks on the Mornington Peninsula

There are plenty of walks to do on the Mornington Peninsula including short walks all the way through to a whopping 100 km walk.

The Mornington Peninsula Walk combines four other walks including:
